The iPad 2 opened to unmitigated success, selling out in nearly all venues their opening launch week, then found out several of the components needed to make the tablet kingpin will be in dire supply after the devastating Japan earthquake that shook the very foundations of many of their suppliers. At the same time, Adobe released Flash 10.2 full support for the Google Android Honeycomb 3.0 OS that drives the Xoom and really puts it a class above the iPad 2 as far as speed and flexibility. Thru rendering of Flash encoded web pages is desktop-amazing on the Xoom, and they have no supply problems. Looks like the race has begun.
Certainly in a hole as far as sales go, the Motorola Xoom can’t complain about the events of the last few days. Nobody likes benefiting from tragedy, but the simple truth is that the supply issues that Apple now has facing them, after not making enough iPad 2s for their launch in the first place, means trouble for them, and opportunity for Motorola.
Like any shark worth its salt that can smell blood in the water, Motorola instantly lowered the price of their Xoom, offering a Wifi only version for $599, the same price as the hard to get iPad 2. And with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 inch tablet arriving soon, it appears that Moto and others are trying to make the best of a bad Apple. RIM is making things tighter with their Blackberry PlayBook that many businesses are making mandatory for all their vendors, and with this spreading of market share, Moto couldn’t be happier now that Flash has arrived.
Consumers in today’s “fast and now” society didn’t wait for the Xoom when the iPad 2 came out first, and they won’t wait for the iPad 2 when they can get the tablet that captured Best of CES 2011 overall in the Motorola Xoom( Moto Xoom case)at the same price now. Once you see the Honeycomb run like it can with full Flash 10.2 support, you will know immediately why Apple had better find some manufacturers to step in and fill the void, or watch market share slip away.
The Xoom and iPad 2 each have a lot going for them, and this competition will not be decided in the next few months, but more likely the next few years. Apple has a commanding lead, and Motorola has performance and features. Priced similarly, which will America choose?
